A board-certified medical doctor based in Raleigh, North Carolina, has gone viral on TikTok after revealing that he decided to cancel traditional health insurance coverage for his family in 2026, saying the rising costs had simply become impossible for him to justify. Although he runs his own private practice and understands the healthcare system from the inside, the doctor still found himself struggling to afford a plan that offered what he considered meaningful protection. “This system is broken,” he said. “Something’s wrong with it.”
According to the physician, the issue became clear when he reviewed what his family had been paying for coverage the previous year. He said that the cheapest plan available on the healthcare exchange for his household of five cost about $1,750 per month, which amounted to more than $20,000 annually. Despite paying that amount, the plan mainly provided catastrophic coverage, meaning it would only truly help if a major medical emergency occurred.
He explained that the policy included a deductible of roughly $4,000 for an individual and $8,000 for the entire family, along with additional co-pays and a high out-of-pocket maximum before any significant benefits would actually apply. As a result, he felt that his family was spending tens of thousands of dollars each year while still needing to pay cash for most routine care, including wellness visits and primary care services.
The Premium Increase That Pushed Him to Cancel Coverage
The physician said the situation became even more difficult to accept when he learned that the monthly premium for the same level of coverage was set to increase by another $200 for 2026. That adjustment would have pushed the cost closer to $2,000 per month, or about $24,000 a year, before even factoring in deductibles and other expenses that would still have to be paid out of pocket.
Frustrated by what he described as an unsustainable system, he said he seriously considered going completely uninsured and instead setting aside one or two thousand dollars each month in a personal fund to cover emergencies. However, he admitted that the fear of having no coverage at all ultimately made him uneasy, so he chose a different route that he felt was slightly more manageable.
The doctor explained that his family eventually opted for a short-term medical insurance plan that would run for four months and provide only catastrophic protection in the event of hospitalization or a severe medical event. Under that arrangement, he said their maximum out-of-pocket responsibility would be about $5,000 if something major occurred, which he felt was easier to accept than the previous plan’s ongoing premiums and deductibles.
For the remaining months of the year, he said the family plans to rely on a cost-sharing program that helps cover expenses above a selected threshold, allowing them to choose how much financial risk they are comfortable assuming. Even after factoring in dental visits, pediatric care, and other routine costs that they would continue paying directly, he estimated that this new approach would still save his family around $13,000 over the year.
Public Reactions Echo His Healthcare Cost Concerns
In the comments under his TikTok post, many netizens agreed that the healthcare system is “broken,” “seriously flawed,” and in need of fixing. One person wrote, “It’s a sad day when a Doctor can’t afford health insurance.” Another commented, “The insurance premiums are a joke.” A third said, “Doesn’t this make you sick? There are billions of dollars to give to Israel yet the tax paying American people can’t afford Healthcare.”
Someone else also suggested that “the fear of not having health insurance” is often the bigger issue, adding that people should “better understand medical costs overall” and learn that coverage is not always strictly necessary in every situation.
