Sacha Baron Cohen’s famous character Borat is getting a second film – and the title is quite a mouthful.
As reported in Collider, the film is officially titled Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan.
It’s certainly the most convoluted movie title in recent movie history – but fitting of Baron’s humor and Borat’s character.
The announcement of this film was a complete surprise. Sacha Baron Cohen and co. seemingly shot the sequel in secrecy. Aside from some social media murmurings that Baron was sighted playing the character last month, nobody knew a sequel was being made.
As expected therefore, the plot of Borat 2 remains vague. All that is known is that Borat is no longer the TV personality he was in the original film. Since the public know who he is, he must now go “undercover” to interview people.
This is perhaps not too surprising. In a 2007 interview following the original’s release, Baron claimed he would retire Borat (as well as another character of his, Ali G) for good.
Talking about Borat’s success to Variety, he said; “the problem with success, although it’s fantastic, is that every new person who sees the Borat movie is one less person I `get’ with Borat again, so it’s a kind of self-defeating form, really.“
In other words, people know that Borat is a façade. This means Baron will no longer be able to fool people as he did in the first film. Saying this, it’ll be interesting to see how an ‘undercover’ Borat will work in the context of the sequel.
Despite Baron’s claims he would retire the character, he appeared as the character on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2015 to promote his previous feature film, Grimsby and again in November 2018 to encourage Americans to vote.
