Boston Commuters Pass by Floating House: ‘Housing Market is Rough’

When your front yard is the sea

The job market might be underwater, but one Boston house is floating on strong. Locals got a glimpse of a floating two-story tugged across Boston Harbor earlier this week. No, it wasn’t washed away by a mudslide or tossed there by a tornado. It’s a houseboat, although it’s cleverly disguised as a grounded home that you’d be forgiven for worrying if you saw it among the waves. While the Trump administration makes homeownership increasingly difficult for many, unconventional solutions are more necessary than ever.

The economy was already rough for the average American before Musk and DOGE got their hands on the federal government. Between high rent and low wages, many struggle to make ends meet in the U.S. That said, a floating house probably sounds pretty good to a lot of people right about now. That didn’t stop this particular houseboat from surprising some unprepared Bostonians during its journey across the harbor.

A Reddit post by u/killabob1138 about the floating house in Boston garnered over 2.3k upvotes and plenty of appreciative comments. “Housing market is rough,” said one commenter. It would have to be at least as rough as the harbor waves to be worth it, and these days, it is. Another commenter put the point a different way, saying,

10,000 more of these and weโ€™ll make a dent in the housing crisis!

Rather than prioritize affordable housing and a healthy minimum wage, the U.S. government is pushing more and more toward homelessness. By making homelessness effectively illegal in some areas, the government is also feeding people into the prison-industrial pipeline. With the situation on the mainland looking so rough, it’s little wonder that those privileged enough to afford it would seek safe harbor elsewhere. A floating house isn’t a solution for all, however. For now, Bostonians may be looking to the harbor for more reasons than one.
