Boston didn’t let threats from Tom Homan and the Trump administration prevent it from celebrating St. Paddy’s. Boston kicked off its St. Patrick’s Day revelries yesterday with the city’s famous parade. The Trump administration recently threatened the city in an attempt to force compliance with ICE. Unfortunately for it, one bullying border czar isn’t enough to force the East Coast’s pluckiest city into submission. Donning green attire and broad smiles, it appears many paradegoers found room for laughter and the occasional drink. Boston remains under threat from Trump and ICE, but that hasn’t killed the city’s joy.
St. Paddy’s Day Comes To a Defiant Boston
When crowds gather in the U.S. these days, it’s more often to boo the Trump administration than to celebrate joyous things. Yesterday, Boston did St. Patrick’s Day right with a parade featuring clowns, floats, banners, and plenty of other emerald offerings. Boston’s infamously cranky weather gave as little quarter as the city itself, offering fog and rain. That didn’t stop people from trooping outside to share some conversation and a beer or two.
A Reddit post about the parade by u/tubiexoxo garnered plenty of appreciative comments. “The last pic is classic Boston, i love it. Great pics all of them [sic],” said one commenter. The pic in question shows a paradegoer in a t-shirt that reads “F*ck You / Lucky You” standing beside a police officer. Another commenter shared their own experiences at the event, saying,
Took my kids and had a pleasant time… unexpectedly compared to memories of years past. No fights, parade floats were good, people acted kindly. Thanks to those that practiced kindness today. [sic]
Boston celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a parade is nothing new. Still, it means something different in 2025. The city isn’t just refusing to comply in advance with illegal and unjust orders from Homan, Trump, and ICE. It’s also refusing to let Trump and ICE silence the spirit that makes Boston the unique community and refuge that it is.
