Today, Deadline confirmed that Brendan Fraser will play the villain in a new Batgirl movie. The film, which was first announced in 2017, will also star Leslie Grace as the titular Batgirl and JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. The film will likely fit in with the current DCU continuity, as evidenced by Simmons reprising his role.
Who is Firefly?
Brendan Fraser’s role in the new Batgirl movie is based on a longstanding character within the DC comics. Firefly, otherwise known as Garfield Lynns, is a common antagonist in the comics, often fighting Batman and Robin or Green Arrow. Firefly is a pyromaniac and would often attempt robberies while spreading mayhem in the form of flames. Fraser’s role as Firefly is not fully confirmed, though sources strongly believe this is the role he will play.
This will be Fraser’s second foray into the DCU, as he was the voice of Robotman on Doom Patrol.
Details About the New Batgirl Movie
In addition to Brendan Fraser, Jacob Scipio joined the cast recently as a co-star in the new Batgirl movie. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct the film, hot off the third Bad Boys installment, Bad Boys For Life. The script comes courtesy of Christina Hodson, who is known for writing Bumblebee and Birds of Prey. Hodson took over after Joss Whedon exited the project in 2018.
There is no word on what the plot will be about. However, the film will release only onto HBO Max, marking it as one of the first DC properties to release exclusively on the streaming platform.
Brendan Fraser’s role in the new Batgirl is merely one prong of his tantalizing comeback. Starting with his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, Fraser has seen a lot of prominent roles come in. He also landed a role in the Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon.
