Justin Timberlake’s new single is competing with a 13-year-old track. After the singer made his long-awaited music comeback with “Selfish,” Britney Spears fans reacted to her ex-boyfriend’s release by sending her song of the same name to the top of the iTunes charts. Although it was only briefly No. 1, Spears’ “Selfish” is still doing numbers at No. 2, while Timberlake’s “Selfish” sits at No. 3.
Exes Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake Compete on iTunes Charts
Timberlake dropped “Selfish” on Thursday, Jan. 25. The track, which marks the star’s first solo single in six years, instantly climbed the iTunes charts. Timberlake was expected to compete with new songs by Megan the Stallion and Morgan Wallen. However, Spears’ “Selfish” was a surprise since it came out 13 years ago. It was featured as one of four bonus songs on the deluxe edition of Spears’ seventh studio album, Femme Fatale.
So, why did “Selfish” resurface? Well, it seems Spears’ fans wanted her song to overshadow Timberlake’s following the drama with The Woman In Me.
A Rocky Relationship
In the book, Spears accused Timberlake of repeatedly cheating on her during their three-year relationship. That was only one of several shocking claims Spears made about Timberlake. Another one involved the pair almost starting a family together. Although they didn’t plan on getting pregnant, Spears didn’t see it as a “tragedy” and wanted to keep the baby. However, since Timberlake “didn’t want to be a father,” Spears ultimately decided to get an abortion, which she called “one of the most agonizing things” she’s ever experienced.
After hearing about the incidents involving the couple, Spears’ fans criticized Timberlake for how he supposedly treated the pop star when they were together. A source told In Touch that Timberlake was “shell-shocked” by Spears’ book. The backlash he received from her fans was so bad that it supposedly made him take a step back from the spotlight. The source explained:
The book does not paint Justin in a good light and he’s well aware of it. Because of the backlash, he’s been canceling club appearances, which were intended to promote his upcoming album.
In Touch
While it’s been months since The Woman In Me dropped, Spears’ fans have clearly not moved past the drama yet based on their reaction to Timberlake’s “Selfish.”
