So many celebrity feuds have taken over our newsfeeds over the years, from Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian to Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Most recently, the Britney Spears and Halsey feud has gone viral on social media. But what happened between them? It’s a bit confusing, so let me explain.
How Did the Britney Spears and Halsey Feud Begin?
The drama between Britney Spears and Halsey started on Friday, July 26, when the “Graveyard” singer dropped the music video for her new single “Lucky.” To go along with her Y2K aesthetic in this era, Halsey took inspiration from Spears for the release. Apart from interpolating “Lucky” with Spears’ 2000 single of the same name, Halsey paid homage to the “Toxic” star in her music video.
During the visual, Halsey plays a pop star who is looked up to by teen girls. We follow one young fan who wishes her life could be as glamorous as Halsey’s. However, she doesn’t know that Halsey is secretly dealing with a lot, too. Of course, this parallels Halsey’s reality as a celebrity battling lupus behind the scenes. At the same time, it appears to reference her own experience idolizing Spears as a kid while the singer went through a hard time during the early 2000s.
The theme was meant to pay homage to the star. So, when Britney Spears and Halsey began “feuding” on social media, fans were confused. In a since-deleted post on X, Spears said she felt “harassed,” “violated,” and “bullied” after seeing the “Lucky” music video. She explained:
I didn’t know an artist like her and someone I looked up to and admired would illustrate me in such an ignorant way by tailoring me as a superficial pop star with no heart or concern at all.
Spears even threatened to take legal action against Halsey. However, just minutes later, Spears deleted the post and claimed she was not behind the message. “Fake news !!! That was not me on my phone !!!” Spears wrote on X. “I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it !!!”
So, in the end, it seems it was all just a big misunderstanding. Halsey made it clear she and Spears have no drama by praising her on X. “I love Britney!!!! I always have and always will,” Halsey wrote.
So, there you have it. The “feud” between Britney Spears and Halsey ended just as quickly as it began.
