When you hear alarms blaring and reports of someone breaking into a bank, you might think there is a burglar trying to steal some cash. That was not the case in this incident. In Suffolk County, New York, police officers were called after an alarm system at a bank in Ridge was triggered. When New York police arrived on the scene, they did not encounter a criminal suspect. Instead, they found one very panicked and confused deer trapped inside the building.

According to body camera footage shared by the Suffolk County Police Department on X, New York police officers entered the Ridge bank through a broken window. Inside, the deer could be seen struggling to move around the office space. Its large body moved awkwardly in the cramped interior, clearly not suited for an urban environment. The deer climbed onto desks and knocked over various pieces of office equipment while the alarm continued to ring loudly in the background. It appeared to be searching for an escape route, repeatedly moving toward various windows, which it may have mistaken for a clear way out.

In another portion of the footage, New York police could be seen attempting to corner the deer inside the bank. The animal was visibly distressed and seemed uncomfortable being so close to humans. It suddenly jumped and dashed past a police officer, who stepped aside, seemingly wary of the animal’s large antlers. The New York police maintained their distance as the deer moved quickly through the space, adding to the tense atmosphere inside the bank.

Eventually, the police were able to capture the deer. By that point, it appeared exhausted and less able to continue fleeing. With a lasso placed carefully around its neck, New York police slowly guided the animal back toward the broken window. The police officers worked together to lead the deer outside, using the same opening through which they had entered. No one was hurt during the incident, though the bank itself sustained damage and will require repairs.

The unusual incident involving a deer and New York police quickly drew attention online, where many people found humor in the situation. The video circulated widely, prompting jokes and commentary. “Oh deer,” one user jokingly said. Another wrote, “Was fully expecting the last 10 seconds to show it running into the road and getting hit by a truck.”

Some viewers, however, had questions about how the New York police handled the situation. Several users wondered why the police entered the building through a broken window instead of another access point. It was unclear whether the window had been broken by the deer or by police during their response. Others questioned why the deer was also led out through that same window instead of the front door. One user speculated, “Door was probably locked and bank staff may not have been on site yet.”

There were also concerns about the animal’s condition. Some users noticed what appeared to be an injury and expressed worry about whether the deer received proper care. “Its mouth looked bloodied, I wish they’d called animal control so it could at least be given what it needed to heal,” one user said.
