Last year’s Transformers: The Last Knight was… a disappointment. Doing poorly enough in the global market that Paramount has put its plans for a Transformers cinematic universe on hold indefinitely. So no one would blame you for being a bit underwhelmed by the idea of a spinoff of the franchise starring the much-loved Autobot, Bumblebee. That being said the fact that this spinoff is being directed by someone whose name is not Micheal Bay was enough to get us interested.
Helming this film is Kubo and the Two Strings‘ Travis Knight, and writing is Christina Hudson, the first woman to pen a Transformers movie. These facts combined with the detail that the story takes place in the 1980s (One of the best decades! Fact!) had us quite optimistic. So when the first official trailer dropped today we were honestly excited to see it, and we think you will agree that so far it looks very promising. You can check it out for yourself below.
The movie, which stars Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie a soon-to-be 18-year-old mechanic, takes place in a small California town around 1987. Charlie has a chance meeting with a particular VW Beetle in a junkyard. As you can imagine she soon learns that this is no simple car, and becomes wrapped up in an adventure with young Autobot. John Cena who is playing another character in the film makes a brief appearance in the trailer.
Overall the trailer gives the movie a much lighter and less bombastic tone than the previous films directed by Micheal Bay. This is a welcome change, and we are definitely hoping to be pleasantly surprised by this film when it hits theaters later this year. In the meantime, we will bring you any new updates or additional news on Bumblebee as it becomes available.
