One would like to see a New Year’s Eve go without incident, but sadly, that’s not always the case. During the celebrations, one bystander in Phoenix, Arizona, almost got hit with a stray bullet while watching the New Year’s celebration fireworks. Fortunately, the bullet only hit a yard ornament. However, in a more unfortunate scenario, this could have ended badly and ruined someone’s New Year’s in seconds. While nothing bad besides a broken decoration happened, many are wondering why the lost bullet occurred in the first place, especially with some laws forbidding the use of guns in situations like this one.
The victim shared a couple of pictures on the city’s subreddit, which show a bullet that smashed their yawn ornament. According to this person in Phoenix, they were watching the New Year’s fireworks show on their porch when something came down and smashed a decoration they had outside, and upon closer examination, they realized that it was a bullet.
Fortunately, no one got hurt, but this could have been a terrible situation if the bullet had landed on the person, especially since OP mentioned how they were standing just one foot away from the ornament that was destroyed.
Naturally, this angered a lot of people since there’s a well-known law in the state called Shannon’s Law. If you’re unaware of it, this law forbids people from discharging a firearm in the air, so if the victim files a police report, the one behind the stray bullet will be facing dire consequences, and we hope they do.
Many believe that finding the culprit will be a bit difficult, especially because it happened in the middle of a fireworks show, at night, and in a busy neighborhood. However, the PD or other LEO agencies might have the right technology to help them find the criminal, so it might be a matter of waiting to see what happens.
Several concerned citizens shared their thoughts on this unfortunate situation, many of them citing the abovementioned law, and others shaming the one who discharged the firearm.
“What is wrong with people?! Thank goodness you are safe!” said Irishbuddha.
“As a firearms owner myself, I genuinely hope any person randomly shooting guns in the air ‘in celebration’ is stripped of their firearms. There’s no reason for this,” commented marvinfuture.
As you can see, people are angry at this because of how dangerous firing a gun in the air is. Thankfully, there were no casualties, and OP was extremely lucky. But we shouldn’t have to wait for another shocking situation to occur for the authorities to intervene. We can only hope that they find the culprit sooner rather than later.
