California Governor Gavin Newsom’s official press office account posted on X that “Donald Trump hates Black people,” quoting an earlier list of figures the president has called “low IQ,” including several prominent Black Democrats and commentators. The post from the Sacramento-based account quickly drew hundreds of replies, with many users mocking the claim and pointing to Newsom’s own past remarks to a Black audience in Georgia about his SAT scores and reading ability. Online reactions mixed sharp criticism of the office’s wording with defenses of the original “low IQ” examples, fueling debate over the accusation.
The post says “Donald Trump hates Black people” and quotes an earlier one from the same account that lists people Trump has called “low IQ.” Those names include Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Stephen A. Smith, and Candace Owens. The quoted post also shares a video of Trump calling Rep. Waters a “low IQ” person.
Trump has used “low IQ” and similar words for several of those people in speeches and posts over the years. People replying to the Newsom post kept bringing up the governor’s own February comments in Atlanta. There he told the crowd, which included Mayor Andre Dickens, “I’m like you. I’m a 960 SAT guy” and said he cannot read a speech because of his dyslexia. Newsom’s office has said he has made those points for years when talking about his learning disability, and reports at the time noted the audience was mixed.
Online Reactions to the California Press Office Post
Many users mocked the claim or called the press office’s wording foolish, with one writing that the account is “DUMB AF,” another labeling it a “Retarded post,” and others dismissing it as something “No one believes” or saying “nobody cares.”
A separate group focused on perceived hypocrisy, pointing to Newsom’s Atlanta remarks with comments such as “You’re one to talk,” “960 SAT guy, I can’t read; I’m just like you people,” and “Shut the [expletive] up 960 SAT tard.”
A smaller set of replies defended or agreed with the post, including one that called the statement “a proven fact. Documented and well known.” In contrast, others suggested Trump’s insults target people of various backgrounds rather than one group alone.
For now, the post has added another exchange to the ongoing back-and-forth between the California governor’s office and Trump supporters online. Commenters continue to debate the claim itself and the comparisons drawn to Newsom’s earlier public remarks.
