California Angry As New Law Cuts Immigrants Off From SNAP Benefits: ‘Get a job and stop having kids’

No immigrants allowed

Thousands of lawful immigrants in California are facing a significant shift in their basic survival as new state-level restrictions on social services like SNAP have taken full effect recently. Under California’s implementation of the big, beautiful bill, eligibility for state-funded food and medical assistance has been sharply curtailed for undocumented immigrants. This means individuals who previously relied on these safety nets must now navigate a landscape of dwindling resources instead of a guaranteed community support system. As you can imagine, this has caused a massive outcry over lost resources, while some local Republicans have been celebrating this moment across social media.

In a post to Twitter (X) by kcranews, a report about the newly implemented restrictions that cut off immigrants from a vast number of resources, such as utility assistance, EBT cards, and much more. On top of Calfresh and its new restrictions to combat fraud, times are getting tough for the large immigrant population across California. While many are saddened by the change, some vocal Conservatives see it as a victory, since actual citizens are being prioritized.

Here is a list of everything that changed as of April 1, with more changes also coming in June, right from the California social services webpage.

Beginning April 1, 2026, the following categories of lawfully present immigrants will no longer be eligible for CalFresh:

  • Asylees
  • Refugees
  • Parolees (unless they are Cuban and Haitian Entrants)
  • Individuals with deportation or removal withheld
  • Conditional entrants
  • Victims of trafficking
  • Battered noncitizens
  • Iraqi or Afghan with Special Immigrant Visas (SIV) who are not Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR)
  • Certain Afghan Nationals granted parole between July 31, 2021, and September 30, 2023
  • Certain Ukrainian Nationals granted parole between February 24, 2022, and September 30, 2024

In addition to these changes, many are online, taking these new restrictions as a celebration and making sure their opinions are heard.

“Well, deport the ILLEGAL ALIENS who will stop getting food stamps and the problem will be solved.”

“CalFresh eligibility changes encourage lazy… to get a job and stop having kids just to stay on welfare. There, fixed it for you.”

“I don’t care if Orcs want a better life. They don’t get to live in the Shire because Mordor is horrible.”

With these Calfresh changes and Governor Newsom’s constant back-and-forth battles with Trump and his administration, it doesn’t seem there will be an end to the SNAP fight between the two sides as a huge midterm election looms.
