It seems like running into a racist at a fast food place is becoming far too common. These days, many fast food workers have to develop solid people skills just to handle confrontational customers, especially the so-called “Karens.” One recent example took place at a Carl’s Jr. in California, where a woman was caught on video harassing an employee.
The exact trigger for her rant isn’t clear, but it appeared to revolve around a woman whom she deemed “not white enough.” The video picks up partway through the incident, with the California woman already in the middle of her tirade. At one point, she makes a condescending remark about a person allegedly not speaking English properly.
Fed up with her attitude, the Carl’s Jr. employee calmly told her that if she didn’t leave, he would call the police. The woman demanded to speak to the manager, but the worker simply said that the manager would tell her the same thing he did. He then directly told her that her comments were racist and that she shouldn’t be speaking that way to anyone.
Despite his repeated requests for her to leave, the woman refused and continued to insist on meeting the manager. Eventually, another customer, a man, stepped in. He confronted the woman, saying that her behavior was ruining everyone’s lunch. He told her she was being annoying and creating a problem, then walked out.
Unfortunately, by the end of the video, the woman was still standing at the counter, refusing to leave. It was unclear whether the Carl’s Jr. employee ended up calling the police or if the situation deescalated afterward.
After seeing the video, many Reddit users voiced their frustration with the racist behavior displayed by the woman. Regardless of what may have triggered her outburst, commenters agreed that it was completely inappropriate to discriminate against someone simply because they couldn’t speak English fluently. One user wrote, “Honestly, this needs to happen all the time, every time, everywhere. Keep your cool, point out their hypocrisy, back people up that are doing the right thing, and send them on their way. Don’t feed the trolls. Evict them.”
Several users praised both the Carl’s Jr. employee and the male customer for staying calm under pressure. Their composed demeanor and lack of shouting likely helped prevent the situation from escalating further. One user summed it up by writing, “MORE OF THIS! I loved the employee standing up for himself and his co-workers, and the customer coming in and f****ng this lady off was the chef’s kiss. These types have gotten away with this stupid bull**** for far too long.”
