The current presidential administration has taken significant steps to undermine the rights of individuals with differing views from the average conservative American. Just because the government disagrees with many of its citizens doesn’t mean the latter will back down. This ideology was cemented in Yosemite’s El Capitan in California when a group of LGBTQ climbers hung a large transgender pride flag between a valley of rocks. If you think bigotry speaks loudly, then you have no idea how loud those against it can really be.
I’m not a climber by any means, so I had to look this up: El Capitan is a massive rock formation in California’s Yosemite National Park, nearing around 3,000 feet from the base to its summit. Alongside being a massive sight to see, it is also world-famous for various types of climbing. So, being able to hang a transgender pride flag from two formations in a way that is visible to everyone is pretty astounding.
If you aren’t quite sure how large the flag really is, then you might want to zoom into the left and right sides of the flag itself. Here, you can see a few people actively hanging it into place. Yeah, I didn’t think it was that massive either. The comments on the original Reddit post has been closed, but most of the best comments both commend the climbers for their feat as well as poke fun at it.
One person wrote, “All that work and its upside down,” which, honestly, prompted me to look back at it. Unfortunately, there were also various commenters vehemently against the act. However, the moderators in the subreddit were quick to set the record straight and validate anyone who might have been offended by those comments. Hopefully, we will continue to see more large acts targeted at the minority groups who are slowly having their rights stripped away.
