We’ve been hearing plenty in the news about President Trump deploying the National Guard to major U.S. cities. Judges have been trying to put a halt to this. According to recent news, a temporary federal appeal says that troops aren’t being deployed in Portland for several days. Now, a judge in Washington, D.C. is trying to pull over 2,000 troops off the streets in the major city. But what’s happening with National Guard troops in California? Governor Gavin Newsom shares some happy news instead of the disheartening and scary things we’ve been witnessing concerning troops in America.
A TikTok video posted by Governor Newsom (@cagovernor) shares a brighter side to the news regarding National Guard troops. The video is captioned, “Governor Newsom deploys National Guard to food banks after government shutdown halts Californians’ benefits.” In his video, you can see National Guard troops smiling as they work together to pick oranges out of crates and put them in satchels to distribute to the people. It’s so refreshing to see them enjoy working together to make a difference. As the government shutdown continues, it’s easy to assume that many American citizens will be going without food. With this scarcity looming, it looks like California wants to make a real difference.
So, why is Trump using troops as a way to strike fear in the hearts of Americans? It’s all in the latest of his attack on the democrats. He’s been attempting to allegedly crack down on crime in Democratic-controlled cities. By doing so, he sends out troops to take control in the cities, supporting his initiatives for less crime and more deportations. Many judges in Democratic cities are now filing legal cases to put a stop to this before matters get worse – and more violent.
California’s example of troops being used for good is a shining example so many other states should follow. As Newsom says, “Our amazing service members with the California National Guard are helping power expanded food bank operations across the state. California refuses to let the Trump government shutdown’s halt to federal food assistance abandon Californians in need.”
One commenter stated on Newsom’s video, “A reason to utilize the National Guard that makes sense.” Another pointed out, “This is the first set of national guard troops I’ve seen in months that look like they want to be there and not like they’re one second away from quitting.” Doing something good for others does a lot for the soul.
