A simple bathroom visit escalated into a heated exchange between a gas station worker in California and a father who was waiting for his daughter in the hallway. The father took to Instagram to share the incident. In the first clip, the woman walked towards the man, pointing to the sign on the restroom door saying they couldn’t use it unless they were paying customers.
The employee added that she was not the person who made the rules, but she had to enforce them. The father explained that they were still going to buy something, but he was just waiting for his daughters to come out of the restroom. Uninterested in his explanation, Karen insisted that the man should leave the hallway.
When he refused, she opened the restroom door and rudely called for the girls to come out. The employee then threatened to call the authorities on the man. In the second part of the video on Instagram, the employee also got her phone and was recording the man and his children as they walked out. Soon, the man and the Karen were exchanging insults. The father accused the employee of being racist, and she defended herself, saying her children were Mexican. The clip was later posted on X, where the caption added that the woman had accused the father and his daughters of stealing.
Netizens Rally Behind The Father, Condemning The Employee’s Actions
Outrage erupted in the comment sections on the videos. Many users characterized the employee’s actions and threat to call the cops as an abuse of authority. Some users related it to a broader obsession with controlling others.
A user wrote, “People need to get a grip. Put the kids first. Let dads take care of their kids. Everyone has lost their mind. And they didn’t have much to lose.” Another user, stunned by the threat to involve the authorities, noted that it was uncalled for. A netizen was more concerned about the intrusiveness of the confrontation, wondering why anyone would want to micromanage strangers using a public facility. “Calling the cops because 2 kids are using the bathroom while the father waits is absurd,” another comment read. A couple of users argued that the woman’s actions were simply an unhappy person grasping at whatever shred of authority they thought they had. Someone highlighted how absurd it was that an underpaid worker would strain herself just to block the young girls from relieving themselves. A Spanish-speaking user applauded the father’s sharp remarks as he exited the store, saying, “The store is not yours when you die, you’re not taking the store with you.“
The incident highlights the importance of approach, basic human empathy, and patience with each other.
