Courtney Love has survived plenty of public chaos during her decades in the spotlight. What fans did not know was that the California-born rock icon was quietly fighting a health crisis so severe that doctors warned she might not survive.

The 62-year-old Hole frontwoman revealed Friday that she became seriously ill after going to England in 2019, repeatedly landing in hospitals as her condition deteriorated. Love said she lost all of her hair, dropped to roughly 100 pounds, and was eventually told by doctors that she was going to die.

“My body just exploded,” Love recalled while updating fans about her long-awaited new record.

“It just exploded, and I was in hospitals a lot. I almost died,” she continued.

The San Francisco-born singer said the experience became so frightening that medical professionals prepared her for the worst.

Love, however, refused to accept it.

“When they said you’re gonna die, I just didn’t believe them,” she said, adding that she somehow recovered and is now healthy.

Love did not reveal what illness caused the 2019 health crisis, making it important not to attach a diagnosis to the new revelation. She also acknowledged that she deliberately kept just how sick she was away from the public at the time.

Courtney Love talks about the meaning behind Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box," her complex relationship with Kurt Cobain, and what his life might have looked like had he survived.

Courtney Love Fans Call Survival Her Biggest Comeback

The revelation stunned fans on X, where several people focused less on Love’s chaotic past and more on the fact that she survived something doctors reportedly believed could kill her.

“That sounds absolutely terrifying,” one user wrote. “Sometimes surviving is the biggest comeback of all.”

“Glad she made it back,” another added, while a third said they were simply “glad she is still around to tell the story.”

The reaction fits the dramatic turnaround Love described herself. When she was creating the album, she believed she might never get another opportunity to make music.

“When I made it, I believed this was my last record,” Love wrote while discussing the project.

Much of the record was created during a period when she was repeatedly hospitalized and facing an uncertain future. Rather than saving ideas for another album, Love said she poured everything into the music because she genuinely believed there might not be a next time.

Seven years later, that outlook has completely changed.

Love says she is healthy again, wants to tour, and is eager to sing for audiences, although she has asked fans for patience while she figures out what her return to public life will look like.
