California Showdown as Tyra Banks Demands the Unedited Netflix Tapes to See What Her Former Best Friends Really Said About Her: ‘A False Narrative’

Roll the tapes!

Tyra Banks spent two decades building America’s Next Top Model with her closest friends, and now she’s asking a court to show her exactly what those friends said about her when the cameras rolled and she wasn’t in the room.

The California supermodel filed new court documents in her defamation war with Netflix demanding the full, unedited interview footage behind the streamer’s America’s Next Top Model documentary, and not just her own. Per the filing, obtained by TMZ, Banks says she is entitled to the raw interviews of Jay Manuel, J. Alexander, known to a generation as Miss J, and Nigel Barker, the inner circle that built the franchise beside her.

The demand takes direct aim at the heart of the defense Netflix has mounted. The producers have characterized the finished documentary as the product of “ordinary editorial decisions,” and her new filing challenges exactly that claim, armed with her suit’s starkest number: of her three-hour sit-down interview, she says just 16 minutes made the final cut.

Banks first sued Netflix and the doc’s producers for defamation in June, claiming the footage was deliberately manipulated to push a false narrative about her and the show she ran for more than two decades, and seeking unspecified damages. Netflix and the producers have denied all wrongdoing and moved in August to dismiss the case entirely. The new filing is her answer to that motion: if the editing was truly ordinary, show the tapes.

The suit’s most serious thread involves former contestant Shandi Sullivan, and Banks’ dispute there is specifically about the edit. She says she had no idea Sullivan considered an incident from the show a sexual assault, or that Sullivan would appear in the documentary at all, and that the cut made it look like she could not remember the story. In the doc itself, Banks said only: “It’s a little difficult for me to talk about production because that’s not my territory.” Sullivan’s account is her own; what Banks is contesting is how the film framed her response to it.

The Miss J dimension gives the filing its ache. In the documentary, the beloved runway coach said he had been dealing with health issues and had not heard from Banks, a public rupture between two people who were once inseparable across the franchise’s entire run. Now she is asking to see his full interview, every unedited minute of what one of her oldest friends told the cameras.

What the Edit Left Out

The thread split into the war the doc started, then agreed on one thing. “They used her and hers, they were never her friends or pals,” ran the Tyra corner, while the other side kept it protective: “She can leave Miss J alone.” One user reached for her own vocabulary, “Guess Tyra’s got some ‘smize’ left in her,” and another asked the question underneath the whole lawsuit: “she could just call them directly, or has that ship sailed already?” But the verdict both camps shared belongs on the courthouse steps: “At this point release everything.“

Discovery fights are usually the driest paperwork in any lawsuit. This one is a woman requesting the director’s cut of her own friendships.
