Mel Gibson only needed a few seconds onstage to ignite another controversy.
The California star appeared at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto on Saturday when an American Sign Language interpreter was signing his introduction for deaf members of the audience. As Gibson walked onto the stage behind her, the Lethal Weapon actor turned toward the crowd and suddenly began making a series of exaggerated hand movements.
Some viewers immediately believed Gibson was mocking the interpreter. Others think people are seeing something that simply isn’t there.
“This is despicable!” one critic fired back after footage of the bizarre interaction spread across X.
Another viewer went considerably further, branding Gibson “a gross human being,” while one person from the ASL community expressed disappointment at seeing what they believed was their language being mocked.
However, the backlash quickly ran straight into another wave of reactions from people who weren’t buying the outrage at all.
Several users argued there was no proof Gibson intended to ridicule the interpreter, while others openly mocked those offended by the clip. One person responded with a Spider-Man meme reading, “Gonna cry?”
Another reaction simply asked, “Sorry, who?” as commenters questioned why such a brief interaction had become controversial in the first place.
The increasingly divided response left Gibson’s intentions at the center of the debate.
Mel Gibson’s Brief Gesture Leaves Internet Divided
Moderator Liam Crowley appeared unfazed by whatever Gibson was doing and continued the introduction without addressing the moment.
That has led some viewers to suggest the actor may have been gesturing toward someone in the audience or communicating with production staff rather than deliberately imitating ASL.
There has been no confirmation of that explanation either.
Gibson himself has not publicly clarified what he intended, leaving viewers to interpret a few seconds of footage for themselves.
His controversial past certainly hasn’t helped.
The Oscar-winning actor has spent decades dealing with fallout from racist, antisemitic and misogynistic remarks, giving critics little reason to extend him the benefit of the doubt when another questionable moment goes viral.
Still, the X reaction makes one thing clear: not everyone believes Gibson deserves the latest pile-on.
TMZ reported that Gibson’s representative had been contacted for comment but had not responded as of Monday morning.
Until Gibson explains what happened, the internet appears stuck with two very different interpretations of the same few seconds.
For his critics, the verdict was immediate. “This is despicable!”
