There are plenty of things we don’t know, and being unaware of certain topics isn’t a moral failing. The issue really begins when someone loudly broadcasts that ignorance to everyone on social media. That’s exactly what happened with a popular content creator from California, James Charles. While he’s mostly known for his makeup content, he’s recently come under fire for some uninformed comments that rubbed people the wrong way.
The whole situation centers around truncated domes, those textured, bumpy yellow tiles you often see at the edge of sidewalks, crosswalks, or near public transit platforms. If you’re not familiar, they’re actually a vital accessibility feature designed to help visually impaired individuals detect changes in their path and avoid hazards like roads or drop-offs.
Apparently, James Charles didn’t know that. But instead of staying curious or asking questions, he chose to rant about them online. The California TikToker expressed frustration over how annoying he finds these tactile tiles, especially near supermarkets and airports. He complained that his shopping cart kept getting jostled as he rolled it over the bumps, and said a bag of ice he bought once spilled everywhere because of them. He also didn’t like dragging his luggage across the textured surface, claiming the experience was “akin to having seizures.” He asked multiple times what the point of the bumps even was.
Unfortunately for Charles, his tone and attitude didn’t sit well with viewers. Many felt that understanding what truncated domes are and who they’re for should be basic public knowledge. His complaints came across as entitled, especially considering these accessibility features exist to help people with limited or no vision navigate the world safely.
Many Redditors didn’t hold back when it came to criticizing the California TikToker. One user wrote, “I didn’t know I could hate him more, but here we go. I think it’s great the city implemented those for the visually impaired. I will never understand his anger. When my city added them to the subway, I thought it was a great safety idea that benefits everyone.”
Others pointed out that Charles could have easily looked up the purpose of the truncated domes before posting his complaints online. After all, there is obviously a reason cities install them. No one is spending time and money putting those tiles in without good cause.
Some users speculated that the video was just another attempt at ragebait meant to stir controversy and grab views. As one person put it, “Oh, he is doing EVERYTHING he can to make those payments lol. You know it’s bad when a YouTuber who used to have millions of subscribers is now ragebaiting on TikTok just to make a quick buck.”
