California Troll Job as Gwyneth Paltrow Answers Sam Altman Dinner Critics With Invites for Shrek and M3GAN and Never Denies It: ‘We’re Serving Swordfish Burritos’

Not denying it

Gwyneth Paltrow got caught planning an off-the-record dinner for the most powerful man in artificial intelligence, and her answer to the internet’s outrage was a guest list of cartoon characters and a menu nobody ordered.

The California native’s headache started when Puck’s Matthew Belloni reported that Paltrow is planning to host OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at her Hamptons home for an “off-the-record al fresco dinner,” publishing a graphic of the alleged invitation to go with it. The optics of Hollywood’s wellness queen quietly wining and dining the face of the AI boom did not land gently, and the heat rolled in across social media within hours of the newsletter hitting inboxes.

Her response arrived Thursday, and it was not a denial, an apology, or a statement from a publicist. It was a comedy set. Paltrow posted a series of fake invitations designed in the exact style of the leaked one, each rendered with the same self-serious formality as the real thing and each promising an exclusive evening honoring a different luminary: “M3GAN,” “Samantha Jones,” “SHREK,” “Jessica Rabbit,” and one “Chanty Beluga.“

She captioned the whole spread with catering details absurd enough to match the guest list: “We’re serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request.” What she conspicuously did not do at any point, as TMZ noted, is deny that the Altman dinner is actually happening.

The best joke in the set, and the one her critics will hate most, is the one aimed directly at them. Accused of cozying up to the king of artificial intelligence, Paltrow’s fake guest of honor is M3GAN, cinema’s most famous killer AI doll. The wink could not be less subtle, and the message underneath it reads clearly: she has seen your discourse, and she is catering it.

The backlash she is mocking is real enough. Critics have spent the week questioning why celebrities keep offering social legitimacy to AI’s most powerful figures at private, off-the-record gatherings, and Paltrow has handed the discourse plenty of recent material: Goop laid off staff this spring in a reported pivot toward AI, and in June she hosted defense-tech entrepreneur Trae Stephens on the Goop podcast to discuss his military ambitions. The Altman dinner reads, to her critics, like a pattern completing itself.

The Goop Way to Answer a Pile-On

Her comment section answered the comedy with a roast of its own, and the room’s wit matched hers. “The PR strategy is now apparently ‘name every fictional character except Sam Altman,’” read the thread’s most-liked reply, while another commenter needed ten words to land the sharpest critique: “It will be difficult to sell wellness when there is no water.” A third turned her own guest list against her: “Ah yes, honoring Shrek. Very aligned with the whole ‘fairytale billionaire tech overlord dinner’ aesthetic.” She catered the discourse; the discourse sent the meal back.

Paltrow has never met a pile-on she could not aestheticize; this is the woman who turned a ski-collision trial into a masterclass in unbothered luxury and walked out of the courtroom with a viral catchphrase and her mystique fully intact. The spoof invites are the same play: no apology, no explanation, just a perfectly art-directed shrug at everyone yelling.

The swordfish burritos are not real. The dinner, by every indication she declined to correct, very much is.
