A California woman says an airline mishandled assistance involving her wheelchair, leaving her struggling to regulate her body temperature and fearing she could pass out or suffer a seizure. She said her wheelchair was eventually located unharmed and brought to her after about 15 minutes, but described the treatment from several staff members as “absolutely inhumane.”

@spacewalk.aly

My wheelchair was located (unharmed) and brought to me after around 15 minutes of sitting there, however the way I was treated by several staff members was absolutely inhumane. Eye rolls, sighing, cutting off my fiance, and extremely dismissive overall. I couldn’t speak, and was fighting passing out. All I could think about the entire time was “I’m going to have a seizure from boiling my own blood and nobody is going to know to cool me off.” Not being able to regulate my own temperature has been something I have managed fairly well, but when my strategic systems are derailed so bad that I’m left ✨literally speechless✨there’s only so much I can do. Thankfully my fiance knows what to do in situations like this. He rushed over to the water fountain, drenched my @armbie and put it back around my neck. Literally?! THE BEST EMERGENCY COOLING TOWEL?! Not at all the intended purpose but it worked wonders. I have a pretty strict rule about not slamming anyone online (business or otherwise) but this needs to be talked about. I did file a report, but something needs to change. Moral of the story, airlines have a long way to go. This mixed with airport conditions caused her temperature and heart rate to spike to dangerous levels. The story was shared by Aly Corvin on TikTok under the username @spacewalk.aly, where the her account of the incident triggered reactions about airline accessibility and how passengers with disabilities are treated. Corvin said she normally avoids publicly criticizing businesses but felt the experience needed to be discussed after filing a report with the manager on duty and submitting a formal complaint.

Corvin said she was unable to speak and was struggling to stay conscious while waiting for her wheelchair. She alleged that several staff members rolled their eyes, sighed, interrupted her fiancé and remained dismissive while she was experiencing what she described as a medical episode.

“I couldn’t speak, and was fighting passing out,” she wrote. “All I could think about the entire time was ‘I’m going to have a seizure from boiling my own blood and nobody is going to know to cool me off.’” Corvin said her fiancé recognized what was happening and rushed to a water fountain, where he soaked an Armbie cooling towel and placed it around her neck. She said the towel was not intended for emergencies but helped cool her down.

The couple happened to have several Armbie towels with them after working two events where they had given away more than 500 for free. Corvin said her fiancé had clipped a few to their backpack, making one easier to grab than the cooling towel packed inside their carry-on.

The California woman also claimed airline employees gave conflicting information about her wheelchair. According to Corvin, a flight attendant said it was at the door, while a gate agent said it was at the gate desk. She said neither was correct, and the wheelchair was eventually brought to her after about 15 minutes.

By then, Corvin said her temperature and heart rate had risen to a dangerous level, making it difficult for her to function. She also questioned why staff appeared more focused on determining whether she had made a mistake than helping her. “I don’t want anyone’s pity, but I don’t deserve to be blamed for not doing good enough while in the middle of a medical episode,” she wrote.

Internet Reacts to California Woman’s Airline Ordeal

Commenters largely sided with the California woman and criticized the airline staff’s alleged response. Several shared their own strategies for managing temperature regulation while flying, including carrying instant cold packs and asking flight attendants for ice and water.

One commenter wrote, “Airports are the literal scum of the earth when it comes to respecting us and our wheelchairs,” while others urged Corvin to pursue legal action or file claims.

An airport wheelchair-assistance worker also offered clarification, saying their team cannot retrieve wheelchairs from the aircraft hold and that the airline’s handling team must bring them to the aircraft door. Not everyone was sympathetic. Some commenters questioned whether a 15-minute wait was unusual at an airport, while another bluntly wrote, “You’re ambulatory. Just walk.”

For Corvin, however, those 15 minutes were anything but a normal airport wait.
