When someone says or does something racist or very insensitive, do you call it out? Some people are brave enough. One woman in California showed where her values lie when she witnessed another customer getting a bit too rowdy. Rather than let it slide—and have the customer get away with it—the woman called her out. What transpired was a heated exchange, with social media on her side.
After leaving Target and getting in her car, TikTok user Glowandgowithdrea (Drea) recorded another customer, a woman with her child, coming out of the store, too. Drea claims in her video that the customer had been racist towards other customers inside, one of whom was a Spanish-speaking lady. “This is the racist [expletive] that just told the lady to speak English while we live in California,” Drea says. Moments later, Drea then slings her accusation at the customer from her window.
The customer mocks Drea by waving to the camera and telling Drea to “shut the [expletive] up” and argues, “This is California.” Never mind the fact that nearly half of California’s population is Hispanic or Latino. The customer continues to protest, but Drea again shouts from her car, “She was speaking English,” and calls the customer a string of curses before she’s finally gone.
Drea’s video then cuts to the lady speaking to her, thanking Drea for being there. According to Drea, the customer had called several older women racist slurs after they tried to pass, saying “excuse me” along the way. To this, Drea shared that “We have to do better as people. Racism like that has no place in our community.”
How Others Are Reacting to Drea’s TikTok Video
People were pretty upset that someone would complain over what language the lady inside was using. Some were also sympathetic to the customer’s son, who had to witness not one but two heated confrontations.
One TikTok user wrote, “I feel bad for the little boy. He looked stressed out.” Another commenter in the same thread dissed the mother for “acting this way” in front of her son.
Another TikTok user thanked Drea for taking action, then said, “Let’s normalize not being afraid of speaking up!” Many shared similar sentiments, as well as pointed out that these people could be your parents without you knowing.
One person wished that Drea’s pillow “be cold on both sides,” which is desperately needed in California. It’s very clear from the comments that people are in favor of others calling out racism when they see it.
