California’s Spencer Pratt Wants Ben Affleck in Skid Row After Actor Claims How to Fix Addiction: ‘The Suffering is Required’

Don’t go hunting for goodwill in that place

Television personality and former Los Angeles, California mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt is once again in the spotlight between that thin overlap in politics and entertainment. This time, Pratt is criticizing actor Ben Affleck over resurfaced comments in which the Oscar winner described suffering as the key to overcoming addiction. Pratt has thus challenged Affleck, even inviting him to Skid Row to see for himself.

I’d love for Ben to join me on Skid Row and explain his addiction theory to the methed out psychos skinning dogs alive and sleeping in their own feces. Plenty of suffering out there, and yet…somehow the addiction persists. I wonder what the difference is… https://t.co/VJP4fAhhrI

The controversy began after a clip from Affleck’s 2021 appearance on The Howard Stern Show resurfaced and went viral again on social media. Reflecting on his decades-long struggle with alcoholism, Affleck said, “The cure for addiction is suffering. You suffer enough that something inside you goes, ‘I’m done.'” He explained that reaching a personal breaking point, particularly fearing the impact of his addiction on his children, motivated him to remain sober.

Pratt, who centered his 2026 Los Angeles mayoral campaign on tackling addiction and homelessness, rejected Affleck’s conclusion. Sharing the clip on X, Pratt wrote, “I’d love for Ben to join me on Skid Row and explain his addiction theory to the methed out psychos skinning dogs alive and sleeping in their own feces. Plenty of suffering out there, and yet… somehow the addiction persists. I wonder what the difference is…”

Pratt has long argued that Los Angeles’ homelessness crisis is primarily driven by addiction rather than a lack of housing. During his campaign, he advocated for expanded involuntary treatment under California’s conservatorship law, proposed large rehabilitation campuses, increased enforcement against fentanyl trafficking, and criticized city leaders for focusing too heavily on housing initiatives. Sadly, Pratt had to concede after finishing the mayoral race behind Nithya Raman.

Pratt’s challenge to Affleck has ignited a debate

The exchange divided social media users, with some defending Affleck’s remarks as a reflection of his personal experience. Many users argued that Affleck’s case is different, something that Pratt needed to consider, especially since the latter is a Hollywood actor with a high net worth and can afford luxuries and privileges that the homeless of Los Angeles can’t.

“He wasn’t speaking of drugs (meth), Ben was speaking on his own relationship to alcohol. And yes, many must suffer (hit rock bottom) before they can start their journey to sobriety,” one user wrote. Another wrote, “Bruh, Ben’s got no clue what suffering looks like, sitting up in that mansion.” A similar comment was also made by an X user, “Privilege is the difference. Saying he hit ‘rock bottom’ with a net worth of over $100 million is so far out of touch with the average human.”

Some contemplated Pratt’s views, writing, “the suffering required is different for every addict and for MOST addicts there is no suffering that is enough to change.” Neither Affleck nor his representatives publicly responded to Pratt’s criticism. The debate has nonetheless renewed discussions over actual, effective treatments for addiction.
