This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Sony added GTA 5 to PS Plus in December 2023, and with it, GTA Online; however, many wonder if a PS Plus subscription is required to play. Given the online functionalities of this title, it’s normal to wonder if it needs Sony’s paid subscription service. Ultimately, most games require it, with a few exceptions, like Fortnite or FFXIV. So, while you might be eager to start your criminal empire in Los Santos, you’ll need to chip in a bit of cash before jumping into this hectic city.

Sadly, yes, you need PS Plus to play GTA Online; there’s no way to try it without the subscription service. However, it isn’t all doom and gloom. As we mentioned, Sony added this decade-old game to its subscription service, meaning anyone who gets it will already have the subscription, provided they are on the right tier. Besides, there are many benefits of becoming a PS Plus member in the long run. You get free games, some goodies for certain titles, and more.

And if that wasn’t enough, the enhanced version of GTA Online usually gets better updates, such as the addition of wild animals that arrived with the Chop Shop update. Furthermore, console players can try GTA+, which gives them $500,000 of in-game money and some monthly freebies.

While it’s annoying to have to pay for a subscription on top of a game you already bought, that’s the trend of online console play nowadays. Yet, you can pause your subscription at any time should you wish to try something different or take a break. Although, we advise against it. GTA Online added the Scrap Yard in the Winter 2023 update, and it brings many profitable robberies and is a good way to earn some passive income. Overall, getting PS Plus to try this game isn’t such a bad idea.
