Canadian citizens are not only in favor of the measures being taken by their prime minister, Justin Trudeau, but they are also taking matters into their own hands. This has resulted in the majority of people in Canada avoiding buying products from the USA, which has forced companies to recall these same products. But now, Canadians have gone a step further in their process of getting rid of anything related to the USA. The movement has gone so far that some Canadian coffee shops are sharing on TikTok how they are eliminating the existence of the “Americano.”
Several local coffee shops have become viral for sharing videos like this TikTok from duncan.garage, from the Duncan Garage Cafe & Bakery in Cowichan Valley, British Columbia. In these videos, several Canadian coffee shops removed the classic American from their menus and changed it to “Canadian” to eliminate a connection to the USA. Not only that, but other coffee shops from different countries of origin residing in Canada have joined in the solidarity by offering Canadiano instead of Americano. Some users even offered great business strategies for this new caffeinated beverage:
Still keep the Americano as an option but mark it up 25%! when people ask what a Canadiano is, say “an Americano without the tariffs” 😄

Many others pointed out that the name “Americano” to refer to a coffee drink is a form of mockery. The name originated during WW2 when US soldiers asked for coffee while in Europe and found espresso too strong. So, the Europeans watered down the coffee so the US soldiers could drink it.
Apart from renaming coffee and withdrawing products from the USA, who knows how far this Tariff war will take us. For now, the governments of different countries are still arguing about whether to enforce the tariffs, delay them, or try to dialogue to reach a peaceful solution for all this chaos. Still, it doesn’t look like this will stop anytime soon.
