‘Canceling Projects and Closing Teams Is Not Strategy, It Is Chaos’: Gamers Outraged After Sony Shuts Down Bluepoint Games

A terrible choice

It seems we’re bound for a week of terrible game news. Yesterday, we learned that Bungie, a studio owned by Sony, would delay its next major update until June. Today, we learned that Sony will shut down Bluepoint Games, one of the best studios of this and the past generation, responsible for making some of the greatest remakes we’ve seen. As you can imagine, this has caused outrage among many gamers, making them wonder that Sony has no idea about what it is doing, as it seems its push toward games-as-a-service continues, while the company keeps putting good studios on the chopping block.

Today, renowned journalist Jason Schreier mentioned that Sony would be shutting down Bluepoint Games in March. As soon as the information got out, the Japanese console giant released a statement on ResetEra, saying the following:

Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.

To navigate this reality, we need to continue adapting and evolving. We’ve taken a close look at our business to ensure we’re delivering today while still well-positioned for the future. As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March.

You can check the full statement here. In the above statement, Hermen Hulst also expresses his gratitude to all the staff at Bluepoint Games and notes that this decision was not made lightly. As you may know, Bluepoint Games was working on a live service God of War game before it reached the chopping block back in 2025. Then, the studio had no announced projects.

This has shocked the whole gaming community, causing a lot of outrage, as Bluepoint Games was a respected studio, responsible for some superb remakes, such as Demon’s Souls, which was a launch title for the PS5.

“This is such a waste. Bluepoint was the gold standard for remakes, and now 70 people are out because Sony changed direction again. Canceling projects and closing teams is not a strategy; it is chaos,” commented one user on Reddit.

“You will get more Horizon games because Hulst is an exec at Guerrilla, and you will like it,” said another user. People are pretty angry, as it seems Sony is focusing on live service titles, which checks out due to the recent Horizon Hunters Gathering announcement, which surprised many, but not in the way Sony expected.

The reality is that the industry is facing a difficult period, with frequent delays, AAA titles launching in poor condition, and companies now shutting down some of the most respected studios. We can only hope for the best for those at Bluepoint Games and thank them for all the top-notch gaming experiences they’ve given us.
