Recently, the conversation surrounding ICE and the current administration’s strong animosity toward illegal immigrants has intensified. It seems that, regardless of one’s immigration status, individuals may find themselves deported to a different country simply for glancing in the direction of an officer. Unfortunately, some people choose to ignore this harsh reality and respond with hatred, perhaps because they lack a better way to express their feelings. In a protest against ICE in Chicago, Illinois, a driver recklessly drove through the crowd, injuring several people. It’s incomprehensible to me why such actions occur.
The video shows a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with various civilians marching and holding signs. Suddenly, some of the protestors jump out of the way of an oncoming car. The red vehicle speeds into the frame, not slowing down for anyone in its path. As the video continues, you can see that several people were struck by the car. What I find most surprising is that there are police officers pursuing the vehicle on foot. I can’t imagine they’ll be able to catch a car very quickly.
When you open up the comments under the New York Post Tiktok video, it’s filled with people excusing the driver’s actions. Considering the officers chasing the driver down, I can only imagine that the protest had a security detail. I mean, what else were they going to do? Congratulate him and send him back in the direction of the main road?
One commenter seems to agree with that particular sentiment, saying, “this is just sad. at the ends of the day we’re all just humans. no one has the right to run people over because they are protesting something that you don’t agree with. where’s the decency to just care for human life they seem so worried about?”
Hopefully, the suspect was apprehended quickly, and everyone who was injured received medical care on the driver’s dime. There is, and never will be, an excuse to mow people down just because you’re a racist.
