SIXT has allegedly hit one of its customers in Florida with a $1,035 damage claim “for something invisible that wasn’t caught at pickup or return,” the driver claims. He picked up the rental in Jacksonville and returned it to Miami International Airport, where an automated scanner detected a tiny dent. However, since the driver claims there’s no evidence this minuscule dent wasn’t already present in Jacksonville, he and hundreds of other Redditors strongly believe this is a scam.
In a post on r/Wellthatsucks titled, “SIXT billed me $1035 for invisible damage,” user mynoseglows shared his story of how the car rental is supposedly trying to make him pay for a tiny dent he’s not responsible for. He was thorough with his investigation by using SIXT again to rent a car, this time from Miami to Jacksonville, where manual damage checks are done without an automated scanner. That said, mynoseglows has reason to believe the dent happened before he rented the first car, but he’s being blamed for it.
“I feel like I am falling victim to a scam that many others have fallen victim to already…” SIXT expressed, as several others in the post’s comment section shared their experiences of wrongly being billed for a rental’s “prior damage.” One person claimed they had the same thing happened to them months ago with SIXT. “Thankfully my credit card coverage handled it – so it didnt cost me anything – but the CC didnt even try to dispute it.”
OP believes that insurance covering the damage is exactly what SIXT wants, accusing the rental service of using this sort of shady practice as its business model. “A one day rental of $100 turns into thousands of dollars in profit for them for ‘damages’,” he explains. He firmly states the company won’t be “seeing a dime” from him, even if the bill hurts his credit score.
Not paying SIXT for the “invisible damage” bill is only the start of mynoseglows’ plans on setting the record straight. He claims he’s already reached out to local news networks in Jacksonville about the situation and even plans to contact the Attorney General of Florida about this alleged scam.
