People can scoff at superhero movies all they want, but there’s no denying that they became a legitimate genre after certain actors started appearing in them. When seasoned thespian Anthony Hopkins showed up as Odin, it became harder for critics to argue that the genre was a passing fad. Some may have tried to claim that this was a blip; Edward Norton left quickly enough. But then Benedict Cumberbatch agreed to plat sorcerer supreme, Steven Strange. And now that Cate Blanchett may be on the verge of appearing in Thor: Ragnorak, we can just say ‘haters gonna hate’ and move on with our lives.
The rumor comes from Variety’s ‘sources’. So it should be noted that, until there is an official confirmation, you should probably hold off on the Lord of the Rings/Thor crossover fanfiction.
Cate Blanchett’s involvement would certainly be a massive boost for the third Thor movie. The previous two films were well received, but never managed quite a critical acclaim of the original Iron Man, Winter Soldier or the first Avengers movie. The presence of the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Academy Award winning actress would definitely be a draw for people undecided on whether to go and see it.
This does, of course, beg the question of what role she will play if it turns out to be true. There have already been rumors that Disney has been planning a female villain. Could Cate Blanchett’s role in the MCU be this? And if so, which one?
