Over the past few weeks, the partial government shutdown, which has affected the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), has also crippled airport operations, particularly in Georgia. One discouraging viral video even shows just how dire the situation is right now, with passenger lines becoming long enough to wrap around entire airport buildings. Hence, it’s not just TSA employees reeling from the shutdown but also travelers, some of whom still missed their flights despite their vigilant preparation.
In a video taken early on the morning of March 23 at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, you can see just how long the security checkpoint lines have become due to TSA staffing shortages. The caption in the video, shared by Matt Van Swol, even claims, “I am hearing that people waited in line for SIX HOURS last night and still missed their flights.”
For a bit of background, around 50,000 TSA agents were forced to work without pay due to the partial government shutdown in the US. As a result, TSA is also experiencing high employee absenteeism. With spring travel, US airports have become a hotbed of airport chaos. As a stopgap measure, President Trump has deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at Hartsfield-Jackson and other airports in different states.
People Online are Debating Who to Blame
Since it’s no secret that the airport chaos many travelers are experiencing right now has political roots, many people in the video’s comment section have begun pointing fingers at certain political parties. One X user even asked, “Who is responsible for this ? Republicans or Democrats? Give me unbiased facts,” and X’s AI answered, “TSA falls under DHS (executive branch, President Trump). Funding requires Congress: House passed full DHS bill; Senate Dems blocked it 5x over ICE/border policy disputes.”
Still, this kind of explanation was not enough for others, as people have their own perspectives on exactly what happened. Another X user reiterated, “The Dems presented a bill that would get the tsa agents paid and the republicans said no…this is the republicans fault.” Thought for many, both Democrats and Republicans are to blame for the partial government shutdown, which began as early as February 14.
At the moment, the long lines continue as ICE and what’s left of TSA continue to manage airport security, with little to no pay for the latter. It’s not clear yet when the shutdown will be resolved or how long it will take for the airport lines to return to more manageable lengths. Regardless, it goes to show another angle of just how much people can suffer due to politics.
