Charlotte, North Carolina has been heating up recently because of the noticeable presence of DHS and ICE agents throughout the area. Many residents have expressed fear and discomfort, worried that agents might start arresting people left and right. Even with this tension in the air, some people from the community refuse to stay silent. They want to push back in their own ways. One of the most talked about examples is a TikTok user named dawokefarmer, who has made it his personal mission to protest ICE activities in Charlotte.

One of his latest videos gained a lot of attention. In it, he and another protester went to a hotel where ICE agents were believed to be staying. He brought a megaphone, his phone, and a looping audio clip of a crying child. His plan was simple. He played the crying sound on repeat, held the phone up to his megaphone, and blasted the noise toward the hotel rooms.

Dawokefarmer said it took about ninety seconds of continuous screaming before anyone inside reacted. Eventually, a door cracked open and a person inside pointed a flashlight toward them. The light swept across them, but it was unclear whether the individual holding the flashlight was actually an ICE agent. After a few moments, the person went back inside and covered the window.

The protesters continued walking around the building, still blasting the loud recording. The noise was extremely irritating, but even so, no one came outside to confront them directly. At one point, they passed a vehicle with a light bar on top, although no Charlotte police officer stepped out or told them to stop.

This was not the first protest that the Charlotte TikToker had carried out. He has done several similar acts aimed at drawing attention to ICE operations. Because of this, many people online have labeled him a kind of troublemaker in a positive sense. A lot of commenters applauded him for taking a stand. One person wrote, “TRUE patriot,” while others thanked him for standing up against ICE and fighting them back in Charlotte.

There were still some mixed reactions. A number of users questioned why police did not intervene. Some people argued that even though the protesters did not act violently, the extremely loud recording could be considered disturbing the peace. Another commenter disagreed and said, “Disturbing the peace? That’s not an arrestable offense at all!” A few people brought up the possibility that other hotel guests, who were not connected to ICE, might have been bothered by the noise.

Even with the criticism, most commenters expressed support. One person summed it up by saying, “If I was a paying customer at this hotel having to hear this…. I would be so proud and bring you refreshments. Keep doing the good work.”
