Chicory: A Colorful Tale unites the director of Wandersong and the composer from Celeste on a game focused on painting. The new trailer introduces Pizza the dog as the main protagonist. They wield a magical paintbrush using their art to add color to a black and white world. Sounds like a winning combination to me.
The development crew behind Chicory have already shown their true colors in their previous works of art. Wandersong blended the use of music and singing to tell a story while Celeste focused on emotion and the experience of attempting to accomplish what seems like an impossible task by oneself.
The entire team got together for the very first time today! From all of us…. thank you so much for you support so far!!!!! 😭 https://t.co/k2kDwJ9q2n pic.twitter.com/UHvmUMgUPV

While still in the early days of development, Chicory is a 2D adventure game from the director, designer, and programmer of Wandersong Greg Lobanov. It also features Night in the Woods sound designer Em Halberstadt and newcomers to the world of indie game development, Alexis Dean-Jones as the character artist and Madeline Berger as the environment artist. The soundtrack is by award-winning composer Lena Raine.
The reveal for Chicory came in a video and Kickstarter announcement. On top of it all, the creative team also posted a link to one of Raine’s songs featured in the final game. If her name sounds familiar to you, she is the maestro behind the music featured in the well-received and beloved indie game Celeste.
Chicory: An Afternoon in Luncheon, is the EP from Raine and is available to check out here.
As a huge fan of Celeste, seeing Raine’s name attached to this project instantly hooked me on the idea. Also, it’s a story about a dog with a paintbrush.
The term Chicory is the name of a type of plant. Its colors are typically a bright blue but can be a pink or white variation. With the game following the idea of art and paint, it’s probable that perhaps flowers will play a large part in the design as well. One of the featured items you can find in the game is a flower dress.
You may know Chicory by another name, however. Earlier this year, the project was announced as Drawdog back in January, which is still an apt description of the indie title. The Kickstarter goal was to reach $30,000 by the end of September but have reached their goal in under 24 hours.
Once successful, Chicory: A Colorful Tale will release for PC and Mac.
