Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson are teaming up for Red One, an action-adventure holiday film from Amazon Studios.
Variety reports that Red One is based on an original story by Seven Bucks Productions president Hiram Garcia. While the details of the plot still haven’t been disclosed, the film is being described as “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.” The film is expected to be shot this year.
The Hollywood Reporter says that this film will reunite Johnson with director Jake Kasdan and Seven Bucks Productions. He previously worked with the director and the production company on Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level. Both films earned a combined $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office.
Evans, who is known for his work as Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will soon be seen in the Russo brothers’ spy film The Gray Man, which will be released on Netflix this year. He is also providing the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Lightyear, and it was recently announced that he would be portraying Gene Kelly in an upcoming untitled movie.
Johnson is no stranger to the action-comedy genre, having starred in the two aforementioned Jumanji films and Jungle Cruise and Central Intelligence. While he and Evans both appeared in the 2021 comedy Free Guy, this will be the first time they will topline a film together. Johnson will soon appear as the title character in the DC Extended Universe film Black Adam.
While Red One is set to be shot this year, it is intended to be a 2023 holiday release.
