Christoph Waltz is well known for his ability to play the antagonist. He has acted in such films as Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, and even as the main Bond villain in Spectre. In addition, his most recent role in The Legend of Tarzan goes right along with this theme. However, Waltz is reportedly in early talks to star in James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel.
Alita: Battle Angel is a live-action film based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga. It centers around a female cyborg discovered by a scientist in a scrapyard. The cyborg can’t remember anything about her past other than her martial arts skills, which leads her to become a bounty hunter. The Hollywood Reporter, who first reported on the story, described the plot as “meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.”
If Christoph Waltz starred in the film, he would play Doctor Dyson Ido, the scientist who first discovers the protagonist. Rosa Salazar (The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, Man Seeking Woman) will be starring in this film as the cyborg. In any case, it will be interesting to see Waltz try out a different type of role. Although he has played a few characters who were not villainous, it is easy to see that type of character is his strong suit.
Rodriguez is directing Alita: Battle Angel, with Cameron, producing. Fox is apparently setting out for a July 2018 release date. However, Cameron did promise he would finish directing the sequels to Avatar first. These sequels are still currently set for 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023, respectively.
