After Activision announced the Black Ops 1 and 2 ports, classic Call of Duty fans may have another reason to get excited. Database listings suggest that the ports for the original COD Modern Warfare 2 and 3, too, could be heading to PS4 and PS5. This rumor is definitely worth watching for anyone who remembers noob-tubing across Favela or shooting through Spec Ops mode with a friend.
Earlier this month, Activision revealed that Black Ops 1 and 2 ports for PS4 and PS5 will be dropping in July. Developed by Iron Galaxy of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 fame, the ports promise to include the full package. Players will be able to dive back into the campaigns, multiplayer, and Zombies instead of offering a stripped-down rerelease.
Now, title IDs for both 38.4GB Modern Warfare 2 and 56.1GB Modern Warfare 3 patches have appeared on Orbispatches.com, a site that tracks PlayStation Store data. This, of course, hints that another ports for beloved COD games may quietly be in the works. Nothing is confirmed yet, but the Black Ops 1 and 2 rereleases were first spotted in the same database, so there’s a clear precedent.

It’s worth noting that we’ve been down the classic Modern Warfare nostalgia road before, but it didn’t quite go all the way. COD 4: Modern Warfare Remastered launched in 2016 alongside the panned Infinite Warfare, bringing back the first game with overhauled visuals. Four years later, Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered arrived in 2020, featuring HDR support and rebuilt cinematic scenes. However, neither remaster fully replaced the originals.
Modern Warfare Remastered eventually added multiplayer, but Modern Warfare 2 Remastered was stuck only with the single-player campaign — without PvP and Spec Ops modes. That left fans without a complete way to revisit one of COD‘s golden eras on modern hardware.
That makes a native PS4 and PS5 port of the original Modern Warfare 2 and 3 particularly exciting. Perhaps this time, COD fans on PlayStation could finally have access to all the games’ features without relying on aging PS3 hardware. For now, though, we will have to wait for an official announcement from Activision and Infinity Ward.
