I say miraculously in the title because Clerks 3 started filming at the beginning of this month! Comicbook also notes that, much like Clerks, Kevin Smith’s production moved at a lightning pace. And as someone who has been a part of a major television show production in Chicago recently, that is an extremely quick turnaround.
Smith decided to give this update through Instagram saying in part:
How I Spent My Summer Vacation! They say that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Well, I never forgot #Clerks, but I’ve still spent the last month repeating it. The Movie-In-Movie moments in #Clerks3 have been the most fun to shoot, as the cast and crew painstakingly labor to recreate my cinematic past. Here, @briancohalloran and #jeffanderson discuss an obscure 70’s sci-fi flick you’ve probably never heard of. Three more shooting days until we wrap Clerks III. It’s been a blissful trip to the past in the Wayback Machine, but we’re running out of script to shoot now – so the end is near. Took 7 years to get here and now it’s almost over.”
Clerks Reunion
Dante, Randall, Jay, and Silent Bob will all return with Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, and Kevin Smith himself will all be back in their rightful roles, along with the impeccable Rosario Dawson coming back as Becky, her character from Clerks 2. Did Becky keep the baby? Seeing as how fast this production went, we might know the answer to that in a couple of months.
Luckily, we did get a Clerks 3 plot update from Smith back in October of 2019. After Smith suffered a heart attack the prior year, he decided to incorporate that into his work. Much like all great writers do:
Randal has a heart attack, decides that he came so close to death, and his life has meant nothing, there’s nobody to memorialize him, he has no family or anything like that,” Smith explains of the threequel. “And in the recovery, while under fentanyl, he comes to the conclusion at mid-life, having almost died, having worked in a movie store his whole life and watched other people’s movies, he tells Dante, I think we need to make a movie. So Dante and Randal make Clerks. That’s the story of Clerks 3.”
Very meta stuff, can not wait to see what the boys and Becky get into this time around, I am hoping for something worse than a donkey show this time around.
