Cold Texas Church Criticized For ‘Unwed Mother’ Address in Woman’s Christmas Card: ‘The Audacity of Someone to Actually Write That and Give It to You’

That’s seriously just cruel

When churches find out that somebody is a single mom, there’s no telling how they’ll react. Some religions embrace compassion and support for mothers, while others follow more traditional teachings and reject motherhood before marriage. Regardless of how churches view single mothers, there’s no reason why they would have to speak up and make somebody feel bad about their situation. One Texas church responded most coldly when they sent a woman a particularly rude Christmas card.

TikToker @blackmamie_ posted a TikTok video captioned, “I’m upset but grateful.” She explains that a local Texas Church, First Methodist Church in San Angelo, sent her Christmas cards this year. Normally, that would be a very sweet and welcome gesture. However, what was inside the cards was absurd and unnecessary. When they addressed her, they said, “Dear Unwed mother, you are not alone in this world.”

The church then goes on to explain that Mary was unmarried at the time of conceiving Jesus. They also go on to say that her family was “poor” at the time, implying that they think blackmamie_ is struggling financially because of her situation. I find it incredibly disgusting that they would write something like that, totally unaware of her personal life. As she reads the letter, she laughs and says, “Oh my god! Who writes this [expletive] in a Christmas letter?”

This TikToker stops reading abruptly and continues, “I don’t even want to read the rest of these cards. That is ridiculous. Why are Christians this way?” They took her unmarried status as a way to slight her in the form of a Christmas card, and that’s not right. It seems like they can keep their judgmental thoughts to themselves. Why even send a Christmas card if you’re going to treat somebody so poorly around the holidays, trying to make them feel bad about their life? So very ‘loving and thoughtful’ of these so-called Christians.

One commenter pointed out, “I just realized I have NEVER heard anyone say unwed father. The audacity of someone to actually write that and give it to you.” Another person stated, “Lost me at ‘unwed mother,’ I would have stopped reading and threw all dem cards away.” Another person hilariously replied, “Took the gift cards and straight threw the cards away. I don’t want that crap but I do want your gift cards.” It’s the least they can do.
