Artificial Intelligence is a great tool, at least when used for repetitive tasks that do not affect people’s work. However, AI is everywhere nowadays, and many people cannot distinguish it. Although there are other tools for detecting AI, this is proving counterproductive. For example, this college student in Georgia was accused of using AI in her assignment, when she never used such a tool. This student may have to face several administrators, managers, and many problems to prove that the work was all hers.
On TikTok, @cyclebreakingclub uploaded a video in which she is crying bitterly, just venting her frustrations because of AI detectors. According to this student in Georgia, she worked on an assignment for a long time, but now her teacher says she used AI. The teacher likely used a tool to determine whether students were using any AI to complete their assignments. However, now these detectors are hurting those who do not use them. Desperate, OP wrote in the video, “AI is ruining my college experience, I guess I’ll be meeting with the dean“.
The worst part is that in the comments, many more users described how, even when using digital media to write or using tools that have nothing to do with AI, AI detectors still report the content. An example would be sending information via Discord or using tools to improve spelling. The situation is so ridiculous that some AI detectors flag documents if “they are so well written” with good grammar and excellent spelling.
“I got flagged because humans supposedly don’t use the Oxford comma. 😒” commented Michelle.
“As an avid writer, the fact anything with an Oxford comma is flagged as AI is insane to me. So good grammar is now somehow too smart for real humans?” said elzbelzox.
“I ran an old paper through an AI detector and it said it was 98% AI. I wrote the paper in 2020,” added Angela.
“Has education gotten so bad that people who are intelligent are being accused of using AI like this?” said blue_20121812.
Fortunately for OP, some users assured her that her college must prove she used AI. Well, at least with something other than just a detector, and they can’t. While she can prove she didn’t use AI for her assignment. However, when technology affects so many areas of people’s lives, perhaps it shouldn’t be used as freely as AI has been.
