Colorado Bride Blew Inheritance and Expects Sister to Come to the Rescue, ‘I’ve Been Diligently Saving Every Penny for a Down Payment on a House’

Pay for your own wedding

It’s totally normal to feel stressed when you’re planning a wedding, especially considering what everything costs. You want your day to be special and something that you will never forget. But at what point do you say to yourself, “I don’t need to be so lavish and buy things I can’t afford”? For one Colorado woman who turned to Reddit, she found that her sister has no shame in asking for financial help with her very own wedding.

Sister demands I help fun her "dream wedding" after blowing her inheritance savings.

Trending on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, OP shared an aggravating story. In OP’s words, Chloe has some “serious main character energy.” She goes on to say she expects OP to “foot a significant chunk of the bill after she blew her entire savings ($25k) on a ridiculous MLM scheme.” Yikes! Not good with money on top of that?

OP tells the tale of the future bride, Chloe, who has always been “terrible with money.” With that said, she has been saving for a down payment on a house, Chloe has spent money on nonsense. Trip loans, wellness drink MLMs, and more. After sinking tens of thousands of dollars into these ventures, she now has nothing left for her wedding. Chloe now expects her younger sister to come to her rescue.

She told OP, “You know, if you even threw in like ten grand it would make such a huge difference. You don’t really need all that house money right this second and this is my one shot at the wedding I’ve always pictured.”

Luckily, OP stood her ground on this one. She shot back at her, “Chloe, there is NO WAY I’m paying for your wedding. You literally flushed your savings down the drain on a scam even though everyone told you not to and now you expect me to bankroll your fantasy.” As to be expected, Chloe called her sister selfish. Their own mother is now repeating the mantra, “Family helps family.”

I couldn’t agree more with OP on this one. It’s not only selfish, but a risk to OP’s own financial stability. Why should she pay for the bride’s misuse of savings and inheritance? Apparently, others in the comment section agree.

One commenter said, “No is a complete sentence. If your mum feels so strongly about ‘family helping family’ then she can pay for it” while another replied, “I swear, people who spout ‘family helps family’ are just people pleasers.”

Others commented they don’t believe Chloe would stop at just the wedding. They think she would suck OP dry financially and not even blink an eye. One stated, “Yes, $10k will turn into $50k very quickly, and probably more.” With family like this, who needs enemies? Sometimes, it’s essential to turn a blind eye to the ridiculousness of family and focus on your own goals.
