Besides extremists with a disdain for immigrants or an unhealthy level of dedication to the current President, many people find it hard, if not impossible, to side with ICE under this administration. Said anti-ICE opposers haven’t shied away from letting their voice be heard either, including several Olympic athletes, such as skier Gus Kenworthy from Colorado. While a few spoke out somewhat indirectly about their disdain for the political turmoil in the US, Kenworthy, who’s originally from the UK, was very bold about his opposition to the immigration police. So bold, in fact, that he allegedly used his own urine to write “[Expletive] ICE” in the snow.
As expected, this act of protest did come with lots of backlash, specifically from the MAGA crowd, many of whom sent him death threats and other hopes of him getting injured, according to the Guardian. “People telling me to kill myself, threatening me, wishing they’ll get to see me blow my knee or break my neck during my event, calling me slurs … it’s insane,” he remarked in disbelief. A demand for violence or even death isn’t new when coming from radical right-wing supporters, but receiving it firsthand was still a shocker for the athlete.
That said, Kenworthy isn’t letting some of the people who attacked him get away scot-free. A Redditor posting to r/Fauxmoi shared a screenshot of the messages and usernames of those who sent him heinous comments and threats. Some hoped he would be critically injured, while others said slurs because of Kenworthy’s sexual orientation. In the end, though, the real ones who lost are the ones who didn’t realize they could be tracked just from their username or profile picture.
“I’m glad he left their usernames hopefully the internet does its thing,” remarked a top commenter in the Reddit post. “Had a look at a few of them,” read a response. “Dweebs and low energy losers.” One person claims that they’re probably “Israeli and Russian bots,” to which thousands agreed. While many of the accounts are locked, probably due to the backlash they received from their cyberbullying against Kenworthy, one person pointed out how some are “stupid enough to have a facebook account that’s open/available.” The individual elaborates on their investigation: “I’m looking through one right now. And yeah, just sad losers who live exactly how they act.”
All that being said, it’s technically wrong to dox people, but in Kenworthy’s case, the MAGA fanatics were the ones who attacked first, with some likely forgetting they can be traced on the internet. “Show their names. Don’t protect them. They don’t deserve it,” exclaimed a Redditor.
