Over time, it’s not surprising to see fashion trends change drastically. The homecoming and prom dresses your parents wore to school are probably vastly different from what we have in modern times. One Florida mom pointed out on social media that the options teen girls have for homecoming dresses are not what she expected. As she says, homecoming season is ‘also known as the teeniest tiniest dress season.’ If you’re the parent of a teen, you probably know what she means.

Meredith (@thats_inappropriate on TikTok) posted a video regarding homecoming season and her fears as her daughter was choosing a dress. She said that her daughter was texting her photos of potential homecoming dresses she liked. Meredith, however, was not too happy with the choices. She said she could only refer to them ‘as if a handkerchief and plastic wrap had a baby.‘ Meredith followed this up by saying, “I’m old” and calling herself “the fun killer.” She understands that times change and so do styles. However, she said she has concerns regarding the dress choices. This is due to the fact that she doesn’t want her daughter to experience an unfortunate ‘outfit malfunction’ while at her dance.

Meredith goes on to say that she wants to prevent “parts and pieces” falling out at the dance, as homecoming dresses fail to cover kids appropriately. She also says that she’s big on “body positivity” but that you can still be concerned about what your children are wearing. As a parent, this makes complete sense to me. I think teaching your teen about their body image and not feeling shame about it is incredibly important. However, there are ways to constructively portray to teens that some clothing is still concerning. As Meredith said, she doesn’t expect her daughter to wear “something one would churn butter in.” However, she said she also wants to “keep my daughter’s parts and pieces inside of a dress.” I get it, Mom, and you’re doing your best here looking out for your daughter.

Apparently, other adults were also surprised by the fashion of the times. One commenter said, “I looked up homecoming dresses 2025. I was speechless.” Another person pointed out, “They look great for sorority type parties, but HIGH SCHOOL?!” Another person suggested, “Get her a strapless bra. Go dress shopping. Have her jump around, dance, pick things up from the floor in the dresses. Video for prosperity. Get her to watch it all back.” It never hurts to try something on before you buy!
