Standing beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Tuesday’s press conference, Donald Trump mused about something even Netanyahu seemed surprised by. The president floated the idea of the U.S. taking over Gaza, clearing it of buildings and people alike, and remaking it as the “Riviera of the Middle East.” The U.S. has long been one of Israel’s closest allies, responsible for military funding and support that helped make the Palestinian genocide possible. In response to the president and his statements proposing an illegal occupation, Democratic Congressman Al Green (Texas) has raised Articles of Impeachment.
Al Green Calls for Another Trump Impeachment
This isn’t the first time Trump has faced impeachment. The U.S. Congress impeached Trump during his first term, but that wasn’t enough to remove him from office or prevent his return to the White House. In his statement following the president’s comments, Green was unequivocal, saying,
Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke. [….] I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done. [….] On some issues, it is better to stand alone than not stand at all. On this issue, I stand alone, but I stand for justice.
Trump has previously expressed interest in purchasing or otherwise occupying Greenland as well. An X post by @CalltoActivism discussing Rep. Green’s call to impeach garnered over 25k likes and numerous comments both in condemnation and support of Trump’s statements. “He should be impeached, convicted, incarcerated, and the key thrown away,” one commenter said of the president.
Unfortunately for Green and his supporters, Articles of Impeachment won’t accomplish anything while Republicans control both the House and Senate. Filing the Articles may be first and foremost an act of protest, but Green’s words and actions still send a valuable message. Despite the president’s flurry of Executive Orders and what amounts to a hostile takeover of the federal purse by Elon Musk, many still stand in opposition.
