Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut stated during a television interview that the biggest threat to the country is not a handful of House candidates in New York but President Trump, who he said is trying to destroy American democracy. The video clip, shared on X, drew strong reactions after recent Democratic primary wins by progressive candidates in New York. Online users pushed back sharply against the senator’s remarks.

The clip was posted on X by journalist Aaron Rupar. It comes from Sen. Chris Murphy’s appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press.

The video shows Sen. Chris Murphy, the Democratic senator from Connecticut, speaking in a studio setting. He notes, “It’s no secret voters aren’t super happy with establishment Democrats or establishment Republicans these days.” He adds that what binds Democratic candidates together, “including the ones in New York,” is that they are “standing up to protect America and democracy.”

Murphy states that “right now the biggest threat to this country [is] not a handful of House candidates in New York, it is the president of the United States that is trying to destroy American democracy,” and that the Democratic Party “left, right and center is united around the fact we need to protect this nation from Donald Trump’s attacks on the rule of law.”

The remarks followed Democratic primary elections held in New York on June 23, in which several progressive and Democratic Socialist-backed candidates won nominations for U.S. House seats and other offices. The clip does not include the full interview or the questions asked of the senator.

Murphy Told to Look in the Mirror as X Weighs In on Democratic Threats

Many users argued that Democrats themselves represented the greater concern. One reply stated, “It’s Democrats. Been Democrats for over a decade. Enemies of the people.”

Another wrote, “The biggest threat to the country are D卐MOCR☭Ts that have adopted socialism which leads to Communism! Lenin laid it out perfectly!”

Some commenters focused on Murphy directly. One post read, “MURPHY is not only a COMMUNIST *expletive*! He’s a world-class IMBECILE!” and accused the party of shifting toward figures including Sanders, AOC, and others.

Additional replies claimed the senator’s framing inverted reality, with one stating, “In the Democrats mentally diseased minds, stopping this is a ‘threat to democracy.’”

Other users addressed the Democratic Party more broadly. One addressed the senator with, “@ChrisMurphyCT it’s DEMOCRATS, AND YOU DARN WELL KNOW IT. They are Communists. Sanders, AOC, mamdani, obama. They are destroying our nation.”

Another warned, “You can run, but you can’t hide. The communists are taking over your party, and soon you’ll be out of a job, just like your buddy Hakeem.”

The clip continues to generate discussion on X, highlighting the sharp divides over recent Democratic primary results and broader questions of political threats. It adds another moment to the ongoing national debate ahead of the fall elections.
