The process to get a green card in the US can be quite challenging, depending on the situation. Yet, one determined woman from Connecticut put in the work and effort to get not one but two green cards for her first and second husbands. Posting to r/AMA, she wanted to share her story of how “I fell madly head over heels in love with a poor immigrant,” and how she managed to get them both set up to live in the States legally.
It all began when she started developing an interest in people from Turkey after meeting a friendly foreigner working at a gas station. Eventually, the two got married, and she helped him get his green card. It wasn’t long before he became a US citizen, but due to issues with his mental health, they separated five years later. Two years later, she met another Turkish man, whose visa was close to expiring.
Again, she went through the same process to help this man get his green card after getting married. Fast forward to 8 years later, she claims this second foreigner turned out to be the “one true love” for her. However, she never cut ties with the first man, who still lives in the US to this day. “I’m his emergency contact and he knows if he ever needs anything I’ll help,” the woman explained. “They sometimes speak to each other in their language and I usually don’t know what they’re saying.”
Based on how she feels about both her relationships with these two green card holders who became US citizens, she expresses as though the process of helping them both legally was worth it. As for the costs, “The filing fees were not high, just very time consuming , maybe a few hundred each time?” she recalled. As to whether she ran into any trouble when she went through the green card and citizenship procedures for her second husband, she responded, “We weren’t flagged but I bet if I did it a couple more times alarms might go off.”
In the end, it’s great that an American woman fell in love with someone from outside the country. Even though things eventually ended, she enjoyed and became accustomed to that relationship with the first Turkish man so much that it was almost natural for her to fall for someone else from Turkey. Love can bring people together, even from different cultures. Hopefully, the US will never lose that aspect of its connection with immigrants, even though it’s hard to see that right now.
