UPDATE: It appears that Phil Spencer’s comments about Control coming to the Xbox Game Pass were incorrect. Shortly after news broke of his comments, the game’s developer took to Twitter to dispel the notion.

The information about Control coming to Xbox Game Pass as reported on a recent Mixer stream is incorrect. We have no news or announcements regarding Xbox Game Pass at this time.

One of the best games of the year is landing on the Xbox Game Pass. It appears this will be happening sooner rather than later.

Control, a well-beloved mind-bending adventure that released earlier this year, will be on the subscription service at some point. The news was announced by none other than Phil Spencer.

Spencer appeared on an Extra Life stream on Mixer when he dropped the tidbit. Talking about games he had enjoyed playing this year, he specifically mentioned Control.

He then added that it hadn’t reached enough people and was glad it was coming to the Xbox Game Pass. This, of course, was a comment made before Microsoft had made an official announcement.

Xbox Game Pass Control

It appears it has been quite the week of big news coming from Phil Spencer. On Tuesday, he let it slip he had a copy of Project Scarlett, the next Xbox at home and was playing it often. Interestingly, one detail he also mentioned seems to confirm the greatest wishes of Xbox Game Pass and Xbox gamers in general.

Project Scarlett will be fully backward compatible. It appears that backward compatibility is going to be less of a process than it has been from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One.

Spencer commented he’s been playing alongside Xbox One users for the last few weeks. That seems to mean there isn’t the same kind of work that needs to be done on the current generation games that were required on previous generation titles.

This would be massive news for Xbox Game Pass customers who want to have a massive library of games on Scarlett when it launches (presumably next fall.) Microsoft has been tight-lipped about their next-gen console. Much more tight-lipped than Sony has been regarding the PS5.

It’s possible Spencer’s recent comments are leading up to a slew of official announcements.
