A group of masked demonstrators sparked outrage in Danbury, Connecticut, after gathering outside the city’s police headquarters Saturday night with a white supremacist message.
Video shared in a Connecticut Reddit thread appeared to show roughly a dozen people holding a banner reading “Keep New England White.” According to local reporting, members of the group also performed Nazi salutes and shouted “white power” as a vehicle passed them.
The cowardly group’s decision to conceal their identities quickly became a major point of criticism among Connecticut residents discussing the footage online.
“Cowards hide their faces,” one commenter wrote.
Another resident mocked the location and timing of the demonstration, writing, “Lmao they did this in one of the most diverse cities in the state in front of the police station in the middle of the night.”
Others rejected the group’s message as fundamentally opposed to the country’s identity. One commenter declared, “These people aren’t just stupid, they’re anti-America.” Another pointed out the apparent contradiction in the demonstrators’ presentation: “‘Keep New England white,’ they say as they wear black face masks.”
Connecticut Dems Condemn the Protest
As reported by the Newstimes, Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves issued a forceful response Sunday evening, saying the demonstrators did not represent the city or its values.
“Let me be very clear: there is no place for hate, racism or white supremacy in Danbury,” Alves wrote. The mayor described Danbury’s racial, religious, and cultural diversity as one of the community’s greatest strengths.
“We will stand together, we will look out for one another and we will never allow hate to speak for this city,” he added. “White supremacy is not welcome here. Racism is not welcome here. Hate is not welcome here.”
State Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan also condemned the demonstration, stating, “Let’s call it exactly what it is: white supremacy.” Danbury police had not publicly provided further details about the incident as of Sunday night.
