Although landlords are allowed certain rights regarding their property, one Chicago, Illinois landlady appeared to have overstepped her boundaries with a tenant. The landlady assaulted his girlfriend and accused her of being a leech. A video of the ordeal was filmed by the girlfriend and shared on Instagram. The clip opened up with the tenant and his girlfriend exiting the building as the elderly landlady walked in. Upon seeing the couple, the woman asked, “The freeloader is here?”
The boyfriend was heard defending his partner against the woman’s demeaning comment, but the woman persisted repeating. “No, that’s the freeloader, I recognize her.”
The homeowner suddenly took off her hat and flung it at the girlfriend while reprimanding the boyfriend. “God, you keep lying all the time!” the landlady yelled. However, the girlfriend flung the hat back at her, prompting the woman to attack her again with the hat.
Although the clip ended abruptly, the caption accompanying the video carried the girlfriend’s account of the homeowner’s ongoing issues with her. It read:
“She is convinced that I’ve been living with him for over a year. I slept over a couple of times a week. I literally have my own house with every single bill in my name and she refuses to believe me no matter what proof I have.”
In a follow-up clip on TikTok, the aged landlord was seen calling the cops on the couple. During the 911 call, the homeowner reported that the tenant’s girlfriend was threatening her and requested protection. When asked about her relationship with the girl, the landlady replied, “She’s illegal,” and claimed not to know her name.
The landlady further alleged that the girlfriend was invading her “space with a camera and a recorder.” With the video going viral, social media users disapproved of the homeowner’s behavior.
One user condemned the landlady’s actions, writing, “This is completely inappropriate. Why in the world would she think it’s appropriate to assault her tenant?!?”
Another social media user added, “It’s not Disneyland; you’re not paying per person. It’s not her business who enters his residence because he’s paying for it monthly. Good on him for moving out. That’s a nightmare!”
A third netizen pointed out that the woman had other intentions when she called the police. The netizen wrote, “Her saying ‘she’s an illegal’ was her attempt at trying to get you kidnapped, weaponizing the police, and for her use. It’s disgusting.” A fourth netizen bashed the woman for “playing victim,” even though she was the aggressor.
No tenant deserves to have this experience!
