A Sarasota community is reeling after a former dog groomer was sentenced to five years of probation following disturbing acts of animal cruelty at his shop along Tamiami Trail. The case, which has drawn outrage from pet owners and animal advocates across Florida, has sparked calls for stricter penalties for those who harm animals.

The groomer, identified as 49-year-old Bryan Santiago of North Fort Myers, once owned and operated Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming in Sarasota. According to investigators, multiple pet owners reported suspicious injuries to their dogs after appointments at the salon, triggering a full investigation. Surveillance and witness testimony later confirmed that Santiago had abused several animals under his care, betraying the trust of families who thought they were leaving their beloved pets in safe hands.

Community Outrage Boils Over

When the sentence was announced, five years of probation, community service, and a permanent ban on working with animals, many locals felt justice had fallen short. Outside the courthouse, pet parents and animal activists gathered with signs, demanding stricter punishment and statewide reform.

“This wasn’t just a lapse in judgment,” said one Sarasota dog owner whose pet was groomed at the shop. “This was abuse. Plain and simple.”

The Sarasota County State Attorney’s Office explained that the plea deal ensured Santiago would never again work in animal services, but for many, that assurance was little comfort. Some called the sentencing a “slap on the wrist” compared to the trauma inflicted on helpless pets.

Animal advocacy groups across the Gulf Coast have since mobilized, pledging to push for new legislation that would increase penalties for animal cruelty cases involving businesses. Pet owners, meanwhile, are sharing resources on trusted groomers and urging one another to remain vigilant.

Despite the outcry, officials stressed that the case has raised awareness and could serve as a turning point for how Florida handles animal cruelty. “Our pets are family, and they deserve protection under the law,” one Sarasota resident said.

As the dust settles, the community’s message is clear that no punishment can undo the suffering, but residents will fight to ensure no other family endures the same betrayal. Or, as one furious dog owner summed it up after the sentencing: “He should never touch a dog again.”
