The mayor of New York City, New York, Zohran Mamdani, has posted a social media advertisement targeting scammers and false advertising during the World Cup. The video itself goes over the fact that nearly millions of dollars will be exchanged hands throughout the cup. However, this video got people talking in the post’s comment sections, with some agreeing that it is a great way to keep people informed, while others find the entire ordeal a big waste of time.
The video is themed with soccer/football at the forefront. Zohran Mamdani can be seen describing particular scams that might arise as a result of the World Cup. The first example that can be seen is the upcharging of water simply because tourists likely do not know the average cost of a bottle.
Another few examples that he mentions are hotels that charge a resort fee without any particular reason, as well as unlicensed drivers at the airport taking advantage of the fact that tourists likely do not have transportation to their destination.
He can be heard saying, “These deceptive practices range from a tacked-on surcharge to an advertisement with hidden fees. But, New York has your back.” Fortunately, it appears that New York City has consumer protection laws that actually prevent this exact thing from happening.
The city expects to enforce this, effective immediately, and even urges people to report anything suspicious to the government. It seems as though they aren’t playing games during this World Cup.
Comments and Reactions Toward Mayor Mamdani’s Scam Prevention Ad
There were plenty of commenters in the replies underneath the video who agreed with everything Mamdani had to say, especially considering how grand this particular event is.
One person even noted that there are people outside of the city who even care about this, citing, “Mamdani videos are the world’s bestest videos to make citizens aware of their govt’s policies. People who are not even remotely concerned with NYC too watch his videos. Why? Bcz it gives them a hope that somewhere someone is doing it right. Thanks for keeping the hope alive.“
Similarly, another commenter wrote, “Why tf is Mamdani the ONLY congressman out here protecting CONSUMERS???“
A different commenter noted that those who are against Mamdani’s political stance seem to be strangely upset about this, with another person writing, “Enforcing the law…? Protecting my consumer rights…? BAAHHHH!”- Conservatives in the comments.”
The video is still going viral on X, and more people are continuuing to leave comments and opinions behind in the relies below.
